Dreadnought! is a Star Trek: The Original Series novel written by Diane Carey.[1] It is written in the first-person from the perspective of Lieutenant Piper.
Plot[edit]
The novel begins with Lt. Piper (no first name), a native of Proxima Beta, taking the Kobayashi Maru simulation at Starfleet Academy. After her 'ship' takes several hits and takes heavy damage, Lt. Piper uses an unusual method to issue commands to the ship's computer via handheld communicator. The technique results in the computer controlling the simulation crashing. The simulator's commander comments during the debriefing that she has come closer to checkmating the no-win scenario than any other command-line candidate, then tells her that she has been reassigned to the starship Enterprise by special request.
Star Trek Dreadnought Class
Lt. Piper meets briefly with Brian Silayna, an Academy cadet in the engineering program and her friend and lover. Piper and Silayna had originally been assigned to the same ship, but with Piper's reassignment (which Silayna reveals was from Captain Kirk, who had been observing the Kobayashi Maru simulation) they wind up saying their goodbyes instead.
Lt. Piper takes a shuttle to the Enterprise and reports to her assigned cabin. Here she meets her cabin-mates: a Gorn named Telosirizharcrede, a human from Earth named Judd 'Scanner' Sandage, a humanoid from Altair Four named Merete AndrusTaurus, and a Vulcan named Sarda. It is revealed that Piper and Sarda have a history together which has generated animosity between them.
Shortly thereafter, Lt. Piper is summoned to the bridge where she finds out that a top-secret Federation vessel named Star Empire, first of a new class of heavily armed and shielded dreadnought, has been stolen by persons unknown and that the Enterprise has been dispatched in pursuit. The head of the dreadnought project, Vice-Admiral Rittenhouse, is in pursuit as well aboard the destroyer Pompeii. She also finds out that the Star Empire has transmitted rendezvous coordinates to the Enterprise and that Piper's unique biocode would be needed to enable transmissions at the rendezvous point.
After a conference, Piper retires to her cabin and has a conversation with AndrusTaurus, where it is revealed why Sarda and Piper have strained relations. Sarda has a talent for defensive weapons design, which Starfleet keeps developing for offensive uses as well and that is something which Vulcans considered immoral. Piper, in her ignorance, informed the Academy staff of Sarda's talents, which led to his great personal embarrassment and being ostracized by other Vulcans in Starfleet. Piper and AndrusTaurus do some research on Vulcan and decide to consult with a Vulcan embassy that specialized in human-Vulcan relationships.
Upon arrival at the rendezvous point, the Enterprise finds Star Empire being attacked by four Klingon vessels. The Star Empire is apparently helpless, its crew unable to fight while the attacking Klingons inflict heavy damage on the dreadnought with phaser fire. Enterprise moves in to help the crippled dreadnought, engaging the Klingons with phasers and photon torpedoes. One is damaged and retreats to hide in an asteroid field. Hard fighting results in another Klingon ship being destroyed. However, the Enterprise is also damaged in the fighting and is left facing long odds against the two remaining Klingon ships. Suddenly, movement is detected in the asteroid field, and a second Star Empire appears. Engaging the damaged Klingon ships with heavy photon torpedoes, this unhurt Star Empire destroys two of them and sends the last one fleeing. Then it is revealed that the damaged Star Empire is in fact a sophisticated sensor projection when it dissolves from sight shortly thereafter, followed by the creation of five more dreadnought projections. This projection device is one of Sarda's weapons projects he finds embarrassing.
Captain Kirk hails the Star Empire and after Piper's biocode is transmitted communication is established. To everybody's great surprise, Brian Silayna appears on the screen. He reads a message from Commander Paul Burch stating that they have seized the dreadnaught in the name of galactic civility and request an ambassadorial party of Kirk, Piper, and a Vulcan. Kirk refuses to comply and orders Piper arrested for conspiracy with terrorists, then cuts the transmission. Kirk orders the security guards to confine Piper to her quarters.
In her quarters, Piper reflects on the situation and decides she had to get over to Star Empire to find out what was going on, why Silayna was on the dreadnought, and why he had never revealed his intentions to her. She tricks open the door by cutting the fire-alarm circuits to the bridge then triggering the heat sensor with a curling iron so that the safety features override the door lock and lets her out.
Piper runs to the nearest transporter room and begins to activate the equipment with the intention of beaming over to Star Empire. Sarda finds her there, having deduced her intentions and location after discovering her missing from her quarters, and informs her that the Star Empire has moved out of transporter range. Instead, they move to the hangar bay, open the doors, steal a 2-seat Arco-class light attack 'sled', and head towards the Star Empire. During the flight Sarda informs Piper that 3 more starships (Hood, Lincoln, and Potemkin) have been ordered by Admiral Rittenhouse to the location, and also accidentally reveals another benevolent invention that Starfleet weaponized and that he is embarrassed about.
Their trip to Star Empire is cut short, however when the destroyer Pompeii drops out of warp, intercepts the attack sled and uses a tractor beam to haul it inside its hangar bay. They meet Vice-Admiral Rittenhouse, who informs them that Commander Birch was his personal aide but had deteriorated until Rittenhouse believe he had become sociopathic. They discuss the situation of Piper and Sarda briefly with Captain Kirk, then Rittenhouse discusses the recent galactic political situation and hints at his desire to unite the various galactic governments under a common flag of peace. He then leaves the conference room to attend to other duties.
Piper, sensing something in the hints that Rittenhouse dropped, uses the destroyer's computer to access Starfleet and Federation organizational charts. She and Sarda find a disturbing pattern: men that had served with Rittenhouse over the years had been placed in high levels of the civilian and military leadership, including the captains of the three other starships en route. Believing Rittenhouse may be planning a military coup, Piper tries to contact the Enterprise, but Rittenhouse and Dr. Boma, a civilian scientist who also worked on the dreadnought project, stop her and order Piper and Sarda thrown in the destroyer's brig.
While in the brig Piper and Sarda discuss Earth history and Piper explains the pattern of socialist political, military, and economic changes that Rittenhouse is repeating and how it would affect the Federation and its galactic neighbors. Suddenly, the power to the brig is briefly interrupted (by Boma, after he realizes Rittenhouse's plans for Star Empire's crew), and Sarda acts quickly, throwing himself through the cell's doorway before the forcefield could re-activate. Sarda then turns off the forcefield and he and Piper flee the detention area.
Moving through the destroyer, they spy the senior officers from the Enterprise and three other starthips walking through the Pompeii’s corridor into the conference room. Fearing for the safety of Kirk and his officers, Sarda and Piper move to the engineering section, bluff past the engineers there, and find an isolated spot from which to contact the Enterprise. Sarda contacts AndrusTaurus and Sandage, who transport over. With Sandage's help they manage to use the ship's intercom system to listen in on the meeting.
During the meeting, Rittenhouse and his hand-picked captains square off against Kirk, with Rittenhouse advocating for harsh measures and indifferent to the potential deaths of the crew on Star Empire and Kirk advocating talks and negotiation with the Star Empire. Kirk becomes increasingly suspicious of Rittenhouse's unwillingness to let him contact the dreadnought's crew and disregard for their lives and balks. Rittenhouse finally orders security to arrest Kirk and his officers and lock them in a stateroom.
Piper, Sarga, Sandage, and AndrusTaurus surprise and disable the guards outside the stateroom and an effort to free Kirk and his officers. They find that Kirk and his officers have disabled the guards inside their room and were planning to come and rescue them. They then sabotage the Pompeii’s phasers before meeting in the transporter room. Kirk, Spock, Scott, and McCoy beam back first; however, before the others can leave the Pompeii’s crew disable the transporter.
They move immediately to the hangar bay; where they have another encounter with a security team. A fight ensues, ending when AndrusTaurus grabs a guard's dropped phaser and shoots him with it. Against regulations the phaser is set to disintegrate instead of stun and the guard is vaporized. AndrusTaurus feels horrible guilt about her action as they continue to flee to the hangar deck.
Once at the deck, they are confronted by Rittenhouse and more guards. Piper threatens to self-destruct the Arco attack sled they arrived on and take the destroyer with it. Rittenhouse, seeing that she's serious, withdraws from the deck and allows them to escape. The four of them escape in two attack sleds, skimming along the destroyer's hull to avoid being shot by the Pompeii’s phaser batteries. Piper destroys one phaser bank, then the two sleds vector away from the destroyer and towards the Star Empire before the Pompeii can bring more phasers to bear.
They escape to the Star Empire and rush to the bridge. There they find a skeleton, untrained, largely bureaucratic crew that has only basic control over the ship's systems. Commander Burch explains the situation and they try to contact the Enterprise. Pompeii tries to jam the signal, and when that fails the destroyer opens fire on the ill-prepared Star Empire. A fierce battle then ensues. The Pompeii's phasers were disabled after the initial shots, leaving three other starships against Enterprise and Star Empire.
Piper is able to unlock the ship's systems, giving Star Empire increased shielding and weapons ability to withstand the heavy attacks by the opposing starships. However Star Empire still takes significant damage, as Burch is not a combat commander and is reluctant to fire on other Federation vessels. Enterprise feigns fatal damage, luring Rittenhouse to order two other starships in to evacuate the Enterprise crew. Kirk then fires on the two starships, inflicting heavy damage and evening the odds. The two sides maneuver warily, until Commander Burch is disabled in an attack. Piper is forced to take command of Star Empire and begins to move aggressively, using the dreadnought's multiple phaser banks and newly activated secondary shielding to dish out heavy hits on the opposing starships. With Rittenhouse's three starships considerably damaged, Piper bluffs their commanders by arming Star Empire's heavy photon torpedoes, a single hit from which would destroy any of the damaged starships killing all on board. Rittenhouse's ships fall back, and Star Empire presses in.
Rittenhouse, seeing that he no longer has the upper hand and that victory is out of reach, orders Pompeii to make a suicide run on Star Empire. Kirk, seeing this, moves in quickly and destroys Pompeii before she can collide with Star Empire.
With Rittenhouse dead, the commanders of his three other starships surrender. The novel ends with medals being awarded to several of the crew and Piper gets promoted to Lieutenant Commander. Then Captain Kirk extends an offer to Piper to go sailing with him on his schooner.

The Dreadnaught-class heavy cruiser, or simply the Dreadnaught, was a type of capital ship built for planetary occupation and space combat used by the Galactic Republic, Galactic Empire, New Republic, local governments, and various other organizations. It was one of the most ubiquitous ship designs in all of the galaxy.
CharacteristicsEdit
- 'Rendili StarDrive's latest gift to the military obsessed.'
- ―CaptainDubrak Qennto on the Dreadnaught-class[src]
DimensionsEdit
The keel of the Dreadnaught-class ran nearly 600 meters with the bow overlapping to produce a clamshell-like appearance. Each vessel had a cluster of weapons blisters spread across the hull. The ship was designated a heavy cruiser in standard classification[20] and was considered a downscaled warship when compared to the ship-designs from the Core.[13]
The forward ventral portion of the Dreadnaught-class was used as a massive cargo hold, with a docking port located at the bow of the ship. Additional cargo holds were situated towards the center of the ship, in front of the areas housing the main reactor and secondary power generators. Docking ports were also located on either side of the ship.
Offensive and defensive systemsEdit
Weapon systems included twenty quad laser cannons (six bow, seven port, seven starboard), ten turbolaser cannons (five port, five starboard and mounted in blisters), and ten laser cannons (five bow, five stern). Some ships were later customized to feature a warhead launcher for anti-starfighter defense.
Deflector shield projectors were also located inside some of the blisters flanking the hull, and the primary and secondary sensor transceivers were located towards the stern of the vessel, on the dorsal and ventral sides, similar to those on CR90 corvettes.
While technologically advanced at the time of its construction, the Dreadnaught-class lacked in sublight and hyperspace speeds (a Class 4 rating), suffered computer failures, and could not compete with comparable designs in terms of firepower and shielding. Between three and five Dreadnaught-class cruisers could outgun one Imperial I-class Star Destroyer.[11]
Crew complementEdit
In addition to the technical drawbacks, Dreadnaught-class ships also required over 16,000 crewmembers to run at optimal performance—perhaps the highest crew per kilometer ratio of any modern starship. This high crew requirement put strains on recruitment efforts and turned supplying a Dreadnaught into a logistical nightmare. In comparison, slave-rigged Dreadnaughts reduced the complement requirements down to 2,200 crewmembers.
Hangar complementEdit
The initial design was not focused towards carrier duty, but as the ships were upgraded and refitted, the center cargo holds were converted to hangar space, and a common complement of 12 TIE starfighters was added to the vessel.
Main bridgeEdit
Unlike many contemporary warship designs, the Dreadnaught-class did not have an easily visible bridge section, opting to shelter the command decks and crew stations inside the main armored superstructure. These areas were located on the dorsal side of the bow.
HistoryEdit
The Dreadnaught-class heavy cruiser was designed and developed by Rendili StarDrive for the Republic Judicial Forces and as flagship for Planetary Security Forces[21] at least 80 years prior to the Clone Wars[22] and was based on the larger MandalorianKandosii-type dreadnaught from the time of the Mandalorian Wars.[23][24]
Early serviceEdit
After being commissioned, the Dreadnaughts saw use in ending major conflicts, but its shortcomings were quickly apparent. To counter the most glaring flaw of the Dreadnaught fleet, the Galactic Republic military developed a technology to reduce the crew requirements. By installing a full-rig slave circuitry system, the crew requirements could be reduced from 16,000 per ship to a more manageable 2,200.[25]
Two hundred of the heavy cruisers were outfitted with this new technology and dubbed the Katana fleet. The project failed when the crew were driven insane by a hive virus, slaved the fleet together, and made a random jump into hyperspace before the virus killed off every crew member.[25] A similar system was also fitted to the Dreadnaughts of the Rendili Home Defense Fleet.[23]Another famous project that saw the use of Dreadnaughts, was the ill-fated Outbound Flight Project, aimed at extragalactic exploration. The ship-design used six Dreadnaughts to fill out the hull.[25]
In addition to galactic governments and organizations, local forces also used these ships, as they constituted a cheaper and more easily accessible alternative to the large warships exclusive to the rich and heavily industrialized sectors.[13] Due to trade restrictions imposed by the Trade Federation, Outer Rim worlds had to rely on homemade fighters and downscaled warships for their own defense, sometimes gaining access to older design plans and leading to localized Dreadnaught-class variations.[13] For example, the Utapauan Security Force built and used several as anti-piracy vessels,[26] with their largest Rendili cruiser being one-fifth the size of a Trade Federationbattleship.[13]Dreadnaught-class cruisers also composed the Rendili Home Defense Fleet.[23]
During the Clone Wars, the Dreadnaughts saw heavy use in many battles, including the Battle of Duro, the Battle of Rendili, and the Battle of Coruscant.Because the more advanced assault ships and Star Destroyers were reserved for clone crews and highly dedicated Republic officers, the planetary security forces and volunteer militaries of the Republic made heavy use of the Dreadnaught-class.[27]
Imperial refittingEdit
Dreadnaughts saw extensive use in the Imperial Navy due to their abundance. Battle squadrons assigned to unimportant systems were often assigned a Dreadnaught-class cruiser in place of a more modern cruiser. To increase its field potential, the Imperial Starfleet upgraded the ships' hyperdrive to Class 2 and converted cargo space into a hangar. With the hangar modification, a Dreadnaught could carry a squadron of TIE/LN starfighters. These upgraded cruisers now saw use as patrol ships, which maintained Imperial dominance over primitive worlds.
Fifty years after the Katana fleet was lost, Grand AdmiralThrawn recovered 178 ships of the lost fleet. They proved critical in his assault against the New Republic, since he had an abundance of cloned navy crewmen.[11]
Garm Bel Iblis maintained a personal fleet of six Katana fleet Dreadnaughts, which he used to capture 15 of the Katana ships, including Katana herself; the final ship of the fleet was destroyed in the battle for the Katana fleet.[11] Some of Bel Iblis's Dreadnaughts were observed to use ion cannons, but it is unknown whether this was a modification his forces implemented or a standard feature of the Katana fleet.
Later useEdit
The still fledgling fleet of the New Republic used donated, captured, or recovered Dreadnaught-class cruisers until the New Republic Defense Fleet formally decommissioned them after the New Class project. During the Yuuzhan Vong War, Dreadnaughts would continue to be used by the New Republic and its successor government, the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances.
Many Dreadnaught-class cruisers were converted by the Alliance and later the New Republic into assault frigates, which were much less manpower-intensive than standard Dreadnaughts and carried a heavier armament.[25]
Some Dreadnaughts ended up as building material for the Hidden Temple during the Sith–Imperial War in 127 ABY.[28]
LegacyEdit
Rendili's practice of letting local shipyards produce their own Dreadnaught-variants on a license lead to many different models being built and fielded.[29] For instance, the Utapauns produced Rendili Dreadnaughts in several different sizes for their own defensive fleet.[13] The Quarren of the Mon Calamari Shipyards designed some of the most extreme models while working on the Rendili license.[29] These engineers later defected during the Clone Wars, bringing their ideas to the Confederacy of Independent Systems. As a result, their refined version of the Rendili Dreadnaught, the Providence-class carrier/destroyer and its upscaled variant, the Separatist Dreadnaught, served the Confederate cause throughout the war.[29]
Behind the scenesEdit
Due to the variety of sources used and the common use of modified Dreadnaught-class vessels, the statistics listed in the infobox may not accurately represent a stock Galactic Republic Dreadnaught. The original Imperial Sourcebook listed a lighter armament than most later sources. Both sets of specifications are listed here.
Dreadnaught-class starships are seen in many of Timothy Zahn's novels. They were first shown in action in Dark Force Rising, in the struggle for control of the Katana fleet. These vessels were mentioned earlier in Heir to the Empire, providing the main hull of Nomad City, and in the Battle of Sluis Van where the New Republic modified variant (an assault frigate) is snared by Chimaera's tractor beam. The Dreadnaughts would also form part of Outbound Flight. Like many of the ships and vehicles in The Thrawn Trilogy, the Dreadnaught originated in the Imperial Sourcebook.
The Dreadnaught-class cruiser seen in Star Wars: TIE Fighter and Star Wars: X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter is noticeably different in physical appearance from other depictions of the vessel, including the model used in that game's sequel, Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance.

USS Defiant | NCC-1764 | The ship is lost in an interdimensional rift in 'The Tholian Web'.[40] Later, it is revealed she was taken by Mirror Universe Tholians, captured by the crew of ISS Enterprise (NX-01), and then used in the service of the Terran Empire in 'In a Mirror, Darkly'.[41] In Star Trek Continues (episode 8, 'Still Treads the Shadow'), Defiant is duplicated during its passage through the interdimensional rift into interphasic space with only a duplicate Kirk aboard. Over the next two hundred years, it gains a sentient AI who attempts to bring it back into the prime universe. The attempt has potentially disastrous consequences and is foiled by both Kirks, the duplicate returning to interphasic space. A Defiant is mentioned, but not seen (except for a wireframe graphic) in Star Trek Discovery, Season One. Oddly, though the Defiant appears in TOS, the Star Fleet Technical Manual lists noDefiant in any of the starship classes mentioned though the book was published seven years after the fact. However, there are several classes not listed in the Publication. The Defiant is listed as a Bonhomme Richard Subclass of the Constitution class. In the Star Fleet Technical Manual lists the registry number of 'NCC-1764' as belonging to the Galina. Since the Defiant appears in an episode, and the Galina does not, then the Defiant is the sole owner of the NCC 1764. But, one possibility is, the number was attached to the she Galina after the disappearance of the Defiant. |
ISS Enterprise | NCC-1701 | Mirror Universe version of the USS Enterprise in 'Mirror, Mirror'.[42] |
USS Enterprise | NCC-1701 | Commanded by Robert April (2245–2250), Christopher Pike (2250–2265), James T. Kirk (2265-2270, 2273–2280, 2285), Willard Decker (2270-2273, ship's commander during refit up to V'Ger incident), and Spock (2280-2285, at which time Enterprise was assigned to Starfleet Academy as a training ship). Vessel's self-destruction carried out while in orbit of the Genesis Planet to prevent ship from falling into Klingon hands.[43] |
USS Enterprise (Kelvin Timeline) | NCC-1701 | Originally commanded by Christopher Pike (launched 2258), then James T. Kirk.[44] Destroyed by Krall in 2263.[45] |
USS Excalibur | NCC-1664[1] | Severely damaged and crew killed during Richard Daystrom's M5 computer test.[46] In the Episode TOS: “The Ultimate Computer” the death of its entire crew is established, however, the status of the Excalibur itself is unclear. It is not determined rather the ship was destroyed or severely damaged. The Star Trek Chronology (2nd ed., p. 88) stated that the ship was destroyed. The fourth edition of the Star Trek Encyclopedia offered two possibilities of the conditions of the Excalibur - the ship was severely damaged in (vol. 1, p. 254) or accidentally destroyed in (vol. 2, p. 329). Even though, the episode itself provided no firm confirmation either way. |
USS Exeter | NCC-1672[1] | All crew lost (killed by alien disease) except for Captain Ronald Tracey, who was on the planet's surface when the disease struck his crew.[47] At the end of the series Captain James T. Kirk stated that the Exeter was an Abandoned Ship, being infected with the virus of Omega IV. Best estimates were that the Exeter was destroyed to keep the infection from spreading throughout the Galaxy. See Kongo for its ultimate fate. |
USS Farragut | NCC-1647[1] | Ship on which James Kirk served as a phaser station operator.[48] Attacked by the dikironium cloud creature, which killed half the crew.[48] The ship never appeared on screen and was never given a class or registry number; both come from The Star Trek Encyclopedia.[1] |
USS Hood | NCC-1703[1] | Participates in Richard Daystrom's M5 computer test.[46] Destroyed by sabotage in Star Trek Continues episode 7, 'Embracing the Winds'. In episodes 10–11 'To Boldly Go', we find out this was done by espers. |
USS Intrepid | NCC-1631[1] | All-Vulcan crew destroyed by a massive, spacegoing single-celled life form.[49] |
USS Kongo | NCC-1710 | In Star Trek Continues episodes 10–11 'To Boldly Go', the Kongo is hijacked by espers and taken to the galactic barrier. They then head for Earth with murderous intent. With the help of Romulan commander Charvanek and her Hawk's Talon, the Enterprise foils them, but not before they trick the Exeter and Potemkin into destroying each other. In their last act of defiance, the espers destroy the Kongo. |
USS Lexington | NCC-1709[1] | Participates in Richard Daystrom's M5 computer test. Commanded by Commodore Robert Wesley[46] |
USS Paris | NCC-1804 | Destroyed in The Battle of Caleb IV. |
USS Pegasus | NCC-1702 | Patrolled the Klingon Neutral Zone.[50] |
USS Potemkin | NCC-1657[1] | Participates in Richard Daystrom's M5 computer test.[46] See Kongo for its ultimate fate. |
USS Republic | NCC-1371 | Although many reference sources included Republic as a Constitution-class heavy cruiser, its status in canon is, to date, uncertain. Kirk himself stated in the episode 'Court Martial' the ship's nomenclature as 'United Starship Republic, number 1371'. |
USS Valiant | NCC-1623 | For his influential 'The Case of Jonathan Doe Starship' article, published in the April 1973 issue 27 of the T-Negative fanzine, future Star Trek model maker Greg Jein accepted the producer's intent and endowed Valiant with the appropriately lower conjectural registry number NCC-1623. But unlike many of his other conjectural Constitution-class registry numbers, the 2006 remastered version of the series afforded no opportunity to bring this ship to canon. The reference book Star Fleet Technical Manual also listed a Constitution-class starship with the name Valiant but assigned with the registry NCC-1709. |
USS Yorktown | NCC-1717 | Disabled by alien probe.[51] |

- 'Wonderful name it has— the Eclipse. It certainly blocked out my view of the shipyards.'
- ―Tyber Zann[src]
The Eclipse-class dreadnought, also known as the Eclipse-class Super Star Destroyer, was a class of ImperialSuper Star Destroyer manufactured by Kuat Drive Yards and mainly used around six years after the Battle of Endor. Like the Sovereign-class, they were regarded as a new generation of Super Star Destroyer.
CharacteristicsEdit
SizeEdit
The Eclipse-class vessels were among the largest dreadnought-scale ships/Super Star Destroyers ever to be fielded within Galactic history. Although technically being dwarfed in length by both the Executor-class Star Dreadnought and the Vengeance-class dreadnought by 1.5 kilometers, the Eclipse-class nonetheless exceeded even the Executor-class in terms of overall mass and volume. Its size was large enough for it to be classified as a space station.
Offensive and defensive systemsEdit
The most deadly weapon carried by Eclipse-class ships was an axial superlaser, similar to but significantly less powerful than one of the component beams used in the Death Star'ssuperlaser.[5] This superlaser was the pinnacle of Imperial destruction in their fleets.
An Eclipse's superlaser easily had the power to destroy other Super Star Destroyers, as the Annihilator found out when Tyber Zann seized the Eclipse's incredible power above Kuat.[6]
The axial superlasers were capable of slashing through any planetary shield to crack open a planet's crust and sear entire continental landmasses.[5][7] The massive superlaser was more widely used to destroy enemy capital ships and space stations during combat.[6] According to AdmiralConan Antonio Motti in the Imperial Handbook: A Commander's Guide, the superlaser's intended use was to penetrate planetary shields as well as vaporize cities with a single blast.[4]
The class benefited from the most significant weaponry-improvements of the last few decades. This included gravity well projectors and improved ion cannons,[5] the former of which were the same types included on the Interdictor-class Star Destroyers.[4] Additionally, these behemoths were armed with hundreds of heavy laser and turbolaser mountings.[5]
In addition to its firepower, the Eclipse-class's hull armor and shields were so strong that it could ram enemy ships without hesitation.[7][8][4]
Propulsion systemsEdit
The Eclipse-class was more mobile than the Death Star, being equipped with both an enhanced hyperdrive and fast sublight engines.[5]
ComplementEdit
An Eclipse-class vessel carried 600 TIE/IN interceptors and 96 TIE Bombers, divided into 58 squadrons; for ground assault, they carried 150,000 Imperial soldiers, 100 AT-ATs, and five prefabricated bases.[5] The hangars were located at the sides of the vessel, with the fore and aft launch bays closely spaced underneath this area, towards the middle of the ship.[8]
Each ship of the class was crewed by over 700,000 personnel,[5] and Eclipse II also carried a complement of Shadow Droidstarfighters.[9] Troop quarters were located on the lower frontal section of the vessel, in front of the hangar areas.[8]
Bridge towerEdit
The bridge tower contained the main communications array and sensor array, located on the port and starboard sides, respectively. In addition to containing the main command station for the ship on the lower portion of the tower, it also housed the deflector shield command center, on the top area.[8] The bridge tower was closer to the hull than that of traditional Star Destroyers of the Imperial-I and Imperial-II class.
VariancesEdit
There were several variances between the two known vessels of this class, the Eclipse I and the Eclipse II: The Eclipse I possessed six engines on the back, whereas the Eclipse II possessed eight. In addition, the Eclipse I had the engines separate from each other and to the sides, whereas the Eclipse II engines were grouped together in a manner similar to other Star Destroyers. Lastly, the Eclipse II had a command bridge tower directly over the superlaser weapon that the Eclipse I lacked.
HistoryEdit
- 'The hyperspace tunnel opened, and this black thing came crawling out from between the stars… We thought it was a ghost ship, until it opened fire.'
- ―New Republic information officer Nara Dun[src]
While the lead ship, the Eclipse, was being built, the Empire also constructed an Eclipse-class prototype to use as a weapons testbed. This craft was later converted to become the battlestationTarkin.[10] The Tarkin was eventually destroyed by a Rebel sabotage team in 3 ABY.[11]
The Eclipse, alongside its sister ship, the Eclipse II, began construction early in the Galactic Civil War, around 0 ABY.[12] The ship class, alongside that of a similar Star Dreadnought class called the Sovereign-class, were planned to revolutionize naval combat as well as ensure the dominance of the Imperial Navy up to the next century of its existence. Details of the planned design were included in the Imperial Handbook, an official aide-memoire for Imperial commanders.[4] The Eclipse was built above Kuat, whereas the Eclipse II was built over Byss. The appearance of both ships' hulls was derived from ancient nautical warships.[8]
By 4 ABY, both the Eclipse and the Eclipse II had its superlaser main weapon installed and in functional condition. However, both ships ended up significantly delayed in terms of completion thanks to Palpatine's demise and the power vacuum that ensued. The then-fledgling New Republic remained unaware of the Eclipse-class' construction: through the New Republic Intelligence Service acquired a copy of the Imperial Handbook just after the Battle of Endor, this was the only information they received on the class and GeneralCarlist Rieekan believed that the Empire had not made progress on the design.[4] In addition, the crime lordTyber Zann wanted to access records on the ship, and if possible steal the ship, so he attacked Kuat and took control of the ship, and used to it to damage an Imperial and rebel fleet (with his manipulating the latter group into granting him access). Afterwards, Zann had no further use for the vessel, finding its size to be more cumbersome for laying low to even the Rebel Alliance, and left it adrift, until the New Republic attacked and destroyed the Eclipse[6]
Later on, this ship was completed and became the reborn EmperorPalpatine's flagship, with its sister ship Eclipse II assuming the same role after the original's destruction.[9]
Approximately 17.5 kilometers long on the keel, these jet-black battleships were among the largest Super Star Destroyers ever built, and among the most heavily armed warships of all time. In terms of scale, they were the successors to dreadnoughts like Eye of Palpatine[13] and the Kuati Star Dreadnoughts that preceded the New Republic era.[14][15]
Eclipse took almost as long to construct as either of the Empire's Death Star battlemoons, and for most of her career, she served as an orbital battlestation at Byss.[5][16] At some point later, the Eclipse came out of hyperspace, to which its black hull caused some New Republic forces to initially believe that it was a ghost ship, although they quickly realized that the ship was in fact real when it opened fire to which only the information officer, Nara Dun, survived and managed to inform New Republic forces about the devastating surprise attack.[7]
She was destroyed along with the reborn Emperor in 10 ABY, during an Imperial attack on Pinnacle Moon in the Da Soocha system, when Luke Skywalker and his sister, PrincessLeia Organa Solo, managed to disrupt the Emperor's control of a titanic Force storm, a massive conflagration of dark side energy that the Emperor had summoned in order to wipe out the massed New Republic fleet.[17]
After this catastrophe, the Eclipse II replaced the original. It was slightly different than its predecessor, with different thrusters. Above the planet Onderon, Lando Calrissian and Wedge Antilles led a small boarding party against the mighty battleship, and R2-D2 was able to override Eclipse II's computer banks. The astromech droid then sent Eclipse II hurtling through hyperspace on a collision course with the superweapon Galaxy Gun. Eclipse II rammed the Galaxy Gun, destroying both. One last projectile was pulled by Byss' gravity and impacted the planet, the resulting explosion annihilating Byss and the clones of Emperor Palpatine.[9]
Behind the scenesEdit
The Dark Empire Sourcebook states that Eclipse was 17.5 kilometers long; this contradicts the description given in Dark Empire, where the ship is said to reach 'ten miles from stem to stern', or 16 kilometers. The author of the Dark Empire Sourcebook has apparently suggested that an additional 1.5 kilometers was added to the first ship of this class. This is supposed to indicate that particular ship's customization and personalization, with the standard design being only 16 kilometers long. Alternatively, 'ten miles from stem to stern' might be merely a vague, rhetorical figure, or the discrepancy may be the result of the long and spasmodic construction period, or it may represent a difference between Eclipse and Eclipse II. To add to the confusion, the Eclipse entry in The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia states a length of 17.5 kilometers, where the Star Destroyer entry has the length at 16 kilometers, which could be a typo since the Star Destroyer is 1,600 meters long.
Regardless of size, considering the initial statements of the size of Executor-class Star Dreadnoughts, it's clear that the Eclipse was intended to be much larger than them. With later statements about the size of Executor ships, the Eclipse is actually shorter, though still likely more massive and more destructive.
There is also an apparent contradiction in the information on for Eclipse's construction. According to the Dark Empire Sourcebook, design work on Eclipse was begun after the Battle of Hoth, while Byss and the Deep Core claims that she was under construction for as long as either Death Star, hinting a timeframe of decades (it should be noted that, at the time Byss and the Deep Core was written, the timescale of Death Star construction was believed to be much shorter, on the order of years).
Byss and the Deep Core further hints that Eclipse was parked in orbit at Byss before the Battle of Endor, as it is only in this timeframe that she could have served as a rendezvous point for meetings of the Grand Admirals as claimed in the text (although the Grand Admirals referred to may be a new group that postdates the original 12); but The Essential Chronology says that she was built at Kuat and only moved to Byss four and a half years after the Battle of Endor, when she was stolen in a partially-completed state by Lira Wessex and her design team shortly before the shipyards surrendered to the New Republic.
There are several ways of explaining these perceived discrepancies, but it is possible that, as with Executor and her sister-ship Lusankya (also originally named Executor), Eclipse and Eclipse II were constructed simultaneously in two different shipyards, with the existence of each being kept secret from the people working on the other. The potential discrepancies in timeframe may be a matter of in-universe error, with the fictional authors who serve as the real-world writers' proxies being unaware of the true length of construction.
Some fans regard the stated power of Eclipse's superlaser as paradoxical. It is described as not powerful enough to destroy a planet, but as capable of overpowering planetary shields and as 2/3rds the power of the Death Star's prime weapon; but some fan calculations suggest that a weapon of such power would be more than sufficient to destroy a planet, and some fans believe that planetary shields are actually harder to destroy than planets. Those who wish to reconcile these beliefs with the canon statements suggest that the '2/3rds' figure refers instead to the magnitude of the energy release as opposed to the total value; this would put the main weapon below the threshold necessary to destroy a planet.
Another possibility, as the Death Star's superlaser consisted of eight individual beams which combined into a single larger beam after firing, is that the Eclipse-class' superlaser had 2/3rds the power of one of the Death Star superlaser's component beams. Alternatively, it may be that the fan-calculations are in error; the exact destructive mechanism of a hypermatter-fueled superlaser isn't fully understood other than it being a direct energy transfer weapon. With The New Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels mentioning it as being made to penetrate a planet's crust, this is still far less than what either Death Star was capable of, which was pulverizing an entire planet.
Another suggestion is that perhaps Eclipse could destroy a planet, but not if the shot's power is depleted by having to travel through a planetary shield.
